UGC links: are they user-generated?
The way of building links on the internet or so called hyperlinks has gradually changed in the last decade and UGC links are a new addition to it. So, in addition to sponsored links you can set up another type of internet linking and we are going to tell you about it.
As you will see, the technological giant Google has introduced several methods of linking pages and any type of media or information you want to make known. One of the new changes is the so-called UGC links, which we will explain in detail below.
What are UGC links?
It is a term, whose meaning is User Generated Content. This type of link has been created in order to indicate to GoogleBot which links have been created by users within your website or blog.
Generally, the reference to a UGC type link is made in the comments section of a blog, web page and in forums. In such a way that other people enter in the comments some links and so do some contributors on those pages or sites.

What are UGC links for?
UGC links have been created in order to indicate to Google which links could be malicious or spammy, as they are links created by users. Changes in the way links are built have been happening since 2005 with nofollow links, changing the way pages are positioned on the web through SEO.
Thanks to spam emails, where many times you had to click on a certain link for anything, Google had the idea to create another type of web link that would tell them what the collaborative internet sites were and what type of content was generated by users on those sites.
Implementation of this type of link
As with sponsored and UGC links introduced by Google, they have the same way of implementation. Thus, when you build a link of this type, you can add other attributes and combine them without any problem. All this using the same HTML structure.
The nomenclature of this type of link is known as: rel=”ugc”. Now, to build a combined link with nofollow, for example, you must follow this structure:
<a rel="nofollow ugc" href="https://linkatomic.com">Linkatomic</a>
If you have the coincidence of having several nofollow or sponsored links and you need to put the UGC attribute, do it this way in each and every one of those links.
That said, when you implement such a link, it sends a suggestion to Google asking it to follow it. However, this request is not mandatory, so Google will not automatically follow it. This gives the company the power to do as it sees fit with this link attribute.
Importance of UGC links
At first glance, it would seem that UGC links are not very important, but the opposite is true. While there is a lot of speculation on the networks about the effectiveness of this attribute, tests have been conducted to show a link that Google does take it into account.
In addition to following them, GoogleBot indexes and crawls them, following its policy of building links of this type so that you don’t lose your crawl budget by having to be following poor quality links or following user-generated links, which would be spam.
Finally, you should keep in mind that Google has the final word when it comes to positioning websites through these attributes. This means that certain UGC, nofollow and sponsored links will be taken into account to position your site, while others will be discarded.
