Domain Authority and Page Authority: What is the DA and PA?

The DA and PA are the acronyms we use to refer to two concepts that over time have come to matter a lot in the world of SEO, as they estimate the authority that websites possess in general.

Meaning of DA and PA

  • DA (Domain Authority): Indicates the strength, relevance or importance of a given domain globally. This means that it not only takes into account the authority of a specific article or a section of the site, but of the domain, subdomains and all the pages it contains.
  • PA (Page Authority): Indicates the strength, relevance or importance that a specific page has on a domain. All new pages have a PA of 1 by default, even if the domain has a higher or lower authority.

These metrics measure authority in numbers ranging from 0 to 100, where 100 represents the highest score. But beware, they are not official, in fact, the Google team had nothing to do with their creation. They were developed by Moz, a renowned SEO company, to estimate the strength of a domain on the Internet.

This means that both PA and DA may not fully reflect what Google itself considers a website to be. Their use, however, has become widespread.

Do DA and PA matter for SEO?

The short answer is yes. DA and PA are two very relevant metrics, and should be part of every SEO strategy you apply for yourself or for your clients.

Both domain authority and page authority show you how well a given website is doing within Google. They function as an excellent starting point for any SEO analysis.

In addition, if you are interested in improving the positioning of a personal project or that of a client, the DA and PA will be just as useful; with these metrics you will be able to analyze the strength of your competitors’ sites; which will give you an idea of what you will need to overcome them; and the quality of the sites that could help you achieve it through valuable backlinks.

DA: Domain Authority, a powerful number

The domain authority of a site depends on more than 150 variables in total, many of which are factors that Google of course considers to rank a web page in the SERPs.

It represents the total ranking strength of a website, that’s how important it is.

A high DA implies that the site will appear in the first Google search results more frequently. This is why it is a crucial aspect for those who are dedicated to SEO.

However, this metric alone is not enough to succeed in the SERPs, there are many factors beyond this one that also play an essential role.

How to increase the authority of a domain?

If you are interested in improving your domain authority (DA) there are a couple of things you can do to achieve this:

  1. Create useful content for your target audience.
It has to be quality content that your audience will want to share and comment on.
  2. Apply a good interlinking strategy.
Make sure your site’s internal linking has a structure that Google loves to index and that keeps users engaged.
  3. Get backlinks
Quality content can get you a lot of backlinks organically, but this takes time, sometimes you can hire a service to get you the backlinks that will make you conquer the SERPs.
  4. Look for and stop toxic links to your website.
Not all backlinks are good, some come from sites that will do you more harm than good. Look for them and eliminate them.

PA: Page Authority, the perfect ally

Although not as universally powerful as DA, page authority is a formidable factor in SEO. Page authority, by itself, can improve your site’s overall domain authority.

With an efficient interlinking strategy, every single page of a site can consolidate the DA of a domain over time.

Another point in favor of page authority is that it increases at a faster rate than DA, which in the short, medium and long term ends up being good for the site in general.

Just like the domain, a page can get backlinks, can attract visits and interaction. All this consolidates the domain authority of your page or that of your client.

If you’re wondering how to improve your PA, the answer is simple: you have to apply the same strategies with which you already grow your DA.

This means that the PA of a page benefits equally from backlinks, traffic, interlinking and much more. Therefore, try to create a page with quality content that is not duplicated and that attracts attention.

Take into account these powerful metrics and optimize your site accordingly, be patient and little by little, applying some of the tips we have given you (such as hiring a good digital media service), you will see your DA and PA grow.

What do you think about these metrics and do you use them in the SEO of your projects?
